Lawton, Oklahoma – Heavy afternoon thunderstorms could turn dangerous across southern Oklahoma and northern Texas, where a Flood Watch remains in effect from 3 p.m. Sunday through late tonight.

According to the National Weather Service in Norman, 1 to 3 inches of widespread rain — with isolated areas receiving more — may cause rivers, creeks, and urban streets to flood rapidly across counties including Comanche, Bryan, and Pontotoc in Oklahoma and Wichita, Clay, and Baylor in Texas.

Low-lying areas, especially near Lawton, Ada, Durant, and Wichita Falls, are at risk for flash flooding, with potential impacts to local roads, neighborhoods with poor drainage, and rural stream crossings. Emergency managers warn that even brief downpours could quickly overwhelm culverts and city drains.

Drivers are urged to avoid water-covered roads, turn around at flooded crossings, and prepare for detours during evening and nighttime travel. Residents should secure outdoor belongings, check sump pumps, and keep phones charged in case of power outages or emergency alerts.

Rain is expected to taper off before dawn Monday, but additional flood warnings may follow if rainfall rates intensify overnight.
