Charleston, SC – Severe thunderstorms are ripping across South Carolina and Georgia early Sunday afternoon, with warnings in effect for damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph, hail, and potential power outages along key travel corridors like I-95 and I-26.
According to the National Weather Service offices in Charleston, Wilmington, and Columbia, severe thunderstorm warnings remain active through 1:15 p.m. for counties including Williamsburg, Orangeburg, Florence, Colleton, Allendale, Hampton, and Berkeley. Parts of southeast Georgia are also under advisories as the line of storms pushes east at up to 40 mph.
Communities from Moncks Corner to Kingstree and down to Walterboro and Gifford are experiencing intense wind, frequent lightning, and bursts of torrential rain. In Georgia, counties bordering South Carolina may see similar impacts into early afternoon.
Major highways—including I-95 between mile markers 28 and 95 and I-26 near Summerville—are at risk for fallen limbs, low visibility, and sudden ponding. Motorists are urged to delay travel and residents should shelter in a sturdy interior room away from windows.
Storm conditions are expected to improve by mid-afternoon, but additional alerts may be issued if the system holds strength toward the coast.
