Deer Park, TX – A hydrogen sulfide leak at the Pemex Oil Refinery on Thursday triggered a citywide shelter-in-place order in Deer Park, leaving two workers dead. The Deer Park Police Department responded to the chemical leak around 5:23 p.m. at the refinery on Highway 225.

Emergency teams from the Channel Industries Mutual Aid (CIMA) responded, and the shelter-in-place order was issued at 7 p.m. The City of Deer Park lifted the order around 9:30 p.m. According to local authorities, air monitoring reports from Harris County Pollution Control, Harris County Hazmat, and CTEH confirmed no hazardous chemicals were present in the community.

The Harris County Sheriff’s Office reported that 35 Pemex employees were triaged, with two confirmed dead. Most emergency personnel were released from the scene, but the investigation is ongoing. Deer Park officials continue to monitor the situation for any potential hazards.
