Tampa, FL – A family of three was safely rescued Saturday afternoon after their boat became disabled and began drifting into a high-risk shipping area in Tampa Bay.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, the incident occurred around 2:25 p.m. on May 2, 2026, Saturday, when the agency’s Marine Unit was alerted by Port Tampa Vessel Traffic about a disabled vessel in a commercial shipping channel. The boat had one adult and two young children onboard and was moving toward a potentially dangerous zone with active vessel traffic.

Deputies quickly located the drifting boat and secured it to a patrol vessel as part of the agency’s Safe Boat operations. Authorities said the fast response prevented the vessel from entering a more hazardous area or potentially colliding with larger commercial ships nearby.

Once stabilized, the Marine Unit towed the vessel out of the shipping channel and transported it safely to the Davis Islands boat ramp. No injuries were reported among those onboard.

The rescue highlights ongoing safety risks in Tampa Bay’s busy waterways, particularly in areas shared with commercial shipping traffic. Officials continue to remind boaters to ensure vessels are properly maintained and equipped with communication devices to call for help if needed.

The incident took place in Hillsborough County within the greater Tampa Bay region, an area known for both recreational boating and heavy maritime activity.
