SUV Driver Experiences Medical Emergency, Fatally Hits Bicyclist in Chesterton

Chesterton, IN – A 65-year-old Porter resident lost his life after being struck by an SUV while cycling on East Porter Avenue. The incident occurred on Monday morning as Salvador Mujica, riding with five companions, was hit by the vehicle, according to the Chesterton Police Department.

The SUV’s driver, a 54-year-old man from Port St. Lucie, Fla., was traveling northbound on Indiana 49 when he reportedly experienced a medical emergency, causing him to lose consciousness. The vehicle veered off East Porter Ave., crossed through grass, and re-entered the roadway, striking Mujica.

The SUV continued across both lanes, eventually coming to rest nearly 500 yards from the accident site. Mujica was pronounced dead at Northwest Health-Porter, while the driver was treated and released from Franciscan Alliance ER.

Chesterton Police are conducting a detailed investigation with assistance from Sgt. Jamie Copollo and Officer Larry Powell. Cpl. Ryan Miller, an accident reconstructionist, is leading the inquiry. Authorities await pending toxicology results and have requested that witnesses come forward.
