Georgetown, DE – A fatal single-vehicle crash in Sussex County is under investigation after a driver died following a collision near Georgetown last week, impacting traffic along a major roadway.
According to Delaware State Police, the crash occurred around 12:00 p.m. on Friday, April 17, 2026, along Dupont Boulevard (US 113) north of McColley’s Chapel Road. Investigators say a Ford Explorer traveling southbound gradually veered off the west edge of the roadway for unknown reasons.
Police said the SUV struck a mailbox, a road sign, and a large embankment before coming to a stop. After the collision, the vehicle caught fire. Bystanders reportedly pulled the driver from the vehicle and began life-saving efforts before emergency crews arrived.
The driver, identified as 81-year-old Michael Jeffra of Georgetown, Delaware, was initially believed to have suffered a medical emergency prior to the crash. However, authorities later determined he died from injuries sustained in the collision.
Dupont Boulevard was closed for approximately two hours as troopers investigated and cleared the scene, causing temporary traffic disruptions in the Georgetown area, part of the Salisbury metropolitan region.
