Indianapolis, IN – A fire broke out early Sunday morning at a vacant home reportedly occupied by squatters on 2850 E New York St., sparking concerns of possible entrapment.

Indianapolis Fire Department (IFD) crews were dispatched at 6:38 a.m. Sunday and arrived to find heavy smoke and flames coming from the structure. Initial reports suggested that squatters might have been inside, prompting firefighters to conduct a rapid search. However, no occupants were found inside the home.

According to IFD officials, firefighters worked quickly, deploying three handlines to bring the blaze under control within 20 minutes. No injuries were reported among firefighters or civilians.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation. IFD investigators are looking into whether squatters were regularly using the home, which had no known utilities connected.
