Albuquerque, NM – Strong winds and dry conditions are raising fire concerns across central and eastern New Mexico as a Fire Weather Watch takes effect Monday, March 4. Residents should prepare for gusts up to 50 mph, creating a high wildfire risk. Outdoor burning is strongly discouraged.
According to the National Weather Service, the alert is in place from late Monday morning through the evening, affecting the Middle Rio Grande Valley, Sandia and Manzano Mountains, Central Highlands, East Central Plains, and West Central Basin. Southwest winds will range from 25 to 35 mph, with gusts up to 50 mph. Relative humidity levels are expected to drop as low as 6%, significantly increasing fire danger.
Sunday, March 3, will be mostly sunny with a high near 67°F, bringing a chance of morning sprinkles. Winds will pick up Monday, reaching their peak strength in the afternoon. Tuesday will remain windy, with a high of 60°F and patchy blowing dust possible.
The weather will stabilize midweek, with sunny conditions and highs in the mid-60s on Wednesday and Thursday. However, a slight chance of showers returns Friday as temperatures cool to the upper 50s.
Residents should stay updated on fire weather conditions and avoid activities that could spark wildfires. Secure outdoor items before Monday’s strong winds arrive.
