Roanoke, Virginia – Residents across much of southwest and central Virginia should prepare for the potential of flash flooding as repeated rounds of heavy rain continue through Wednesday, raising concerns for flooded roads, swollen creeks and rapidly changing travel conditions.
According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, a Flood Watch is in effect for the entire forecast area as persistent rainfall is expected to continue through Wednesday. The greatest concern is for urban areas, low-lying locations and flood-prone communities, where repeated downpours could quickly overwhelm drainage systems and trigger scattered flash flooding.
The Flood Watch remains in effect until 8 a.m. Wednesday for counties west of the Blue Ridge, including areas around Blacksburg, Wytheville and Bluefield. For counties east of the Blue Ridge, including Roanoke, Lynchburg, Martinsville and Danville, the watch continues until 7 p.m. Wednesday as rain is expected to linger longer across the Piedmont.
The National Weather Service warns that excessive runoff may lead to flooding along rivers, creeks and streams, with smaller waterways potentially rising out of their banks. Motorists should be prepared for water-covered roads, especially during periods of heavier rainfall. Never drive through flooded roadways, as water depth and road damage can be difficult to judge.
Residents should closely monitor forecasts and have multiple ways to receive weather alerts, particularly overnight when flooding is harder to recognize. Additional Flash Flood Warnings or other advisories may be issued as heavier bands of rain develop through Wednesday.
