Springfield, Missouri – Anyone spending time outdoors across southwest Missouri today should take extra precautions as dangerous heat and humidity push heat index values as high as 120 degrees before a cold front delivers more seasonable temperatures beginning Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Springfield, afternoon temperatures today will range from 92 to 101 degrees, while the combination of heat and humidity will make it feel between 100 and 120 degrees. The prolonged exposure to these conditions can quickly lead to heat-related illnesses, especially for outdoor workers, athletes and anyone without access to air conditioning.
Communities across the Ozarks, including Springfield, Branson, Joplin, Lebanon and West Plains, will experience the hottest conditions before the cold front moves through later today. Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of water, wear lightweight clothing, avoid strenuous outdoor activity during the afternoon and check on older adults, neighbors and anyone without reliable cooling.
A noticeably more comfortable air mass arrives Wednesday, with afternoon highs ranging from 82 to 90 degrees and overnight lows between 61 and 69 degrees. Pleasant conditions continue Thursday, with highs from 80 to 90 degrees. By Friday, temperatures will range from 77 to 92 degrees, and rain and thunderstorm chances increase to 40% to 70%, especially during the afternoon and evening.
The cooler pattern will provide a brief break from the extreme heat before additional summertime warmth returns. The National Weather Service will continue monitoring Friday’s storm potential and issue additional advisories if needed.
