Blacksburg, Virginia – Clearing skies and falling temperatures tonight are setting up a frost and freeze risk that could damage plants and impact early Monday conditions across southwest Virginia.

According to the National Weather Service in Blacksburg, morning rain showers will exit by midday Sunday, with sunshine developing through the afternoon. Gusty winds will follow the departing system, helping temperatures reach the low to mid-50s in the mountains and low to mid-60s across the Piedmont.

By late evening, winds will relax and skies will clear, allowing temperatures to drop quickly into the 30s overnight. Areas in southeast West Virginia and higher elevations of southwest Virginia are most likely to fall below freezing before sunrise Monday, creating conditions for frost formation and potential plant damage.

Communities including Blacksburg, Roanoke, and Bluefield may see patchy frost develop between 3 a.m. and 7 a.m., especially in sheltered valleys. Roads are expected to remain dry, but cold-sensitive infrastructure and agriculture could be affected.

Residents should cover or bring in sensitive plants and check outdoor plumbing before midnight. Conditions improve after sunrise Monday, with temperatures rebounding and drier weather continuing into early week, though additional cold mornings remain possible.
