Columbus, Ohio – Thunderstorms are expected to develop after 5 p.m. Friday across much of Ohio, with the evening commute at risk for delays as heavy rain and gusty winds move across major highways including I-70, I-71, and I-75.

According to the National Weather Service in Wilmington, a cold front will push into the region late today, triggering widespread showers and thunderstorms from late afternoon through the overnight hours. Rain chances climb to 70–80% this evening, especially across central and southern Ohio.

Cities including Columbus, Dayton, Cincinnati, Springfield, and Newark will see temperatures surge into the low to mid-80s before storms arrive. Rainfall and lightning may intensify after sunset, with localized downpours reducing visibility and causing ponding on roads. While severe weather is not widespread, isolated stronger storms could produce brief wind gusts capable of knocking down small branches.

Drivers should plan for slower travel this evening, use headlights in heavy rain, and avoid water-covered roads. Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor items ahead of incoming storms and monitor alerts through the night.

Storms will taper early Saturday morning as the cold front moves east, with cooler highs in the low to mid-70s expected this weekend. Additional updates are likely if stronger storms develop.
