Des Moines, IA – A powerful winter storm is set to bring heavy snowfall and strong winds to southern Iowa starting Saturday night, creating hazardous travel conditions through Sunday evening.
According to the National Weather Service (NWS), a Winter Storm Warning is in effect from 9 p.m. Saturday to 3 a.m. Monday for Decatur, Ringgold, and Taylor counties. Forecasts predict snowfall totals of 4 to 8 inches, with the heaviest accumulation near the Missouri border. Winds could gust up to 35 mph, potentially causing blowing and drifting snow, reducing visibility to near whiteout conditions.
The NWS noted that snowfall amounts will vary sharply within counties due to dry air moving in from the north. This variability depends on the exact track of the storm, which could shift and alter forecasts.
Residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel. For those who must venture out, emergency supplies such as a flashlight, food, and water should be carried. Travelers can check road conditions through the Iowa 511 app or website.
The storm is expected to clear by early Monday morning, but its impacts on roads and visibility could linger.
