Detroit, MI – Southeastern Michigan residents have been advised of an Air Quality Alert for Sunday, June 16, due to elevated ozone levels expected in the region.

According to the US National Weather Service Detroit/Pontiac, the alert encompasses St. Clair, Livingston, Oakland, Macomb, Washtenaw, Wayne, and Monroe counties. Officials recommend that individuals, particularly those with respiratory issues like asthma, limit prolonged outdoor activities to reduce health risks.

The Michigan Department of Environmental Quality has outlined several steps residents can take to help mitigate ozone levels. These include avoiding the refueling of vehicles or topping off fuel tanks, reducing the use of gasoline-powered lawn equipment, and limiting the use of charcoal lighter fluid. Positive actions to help manage ozone levels include carpooling, combining errands, and biking or walking to work.

The alert aims to protect public health and improve air quality by encouraging residents to adopt practices that limit the formation of ground-level ozone. The NWS and Michigan DEQ emphasize the importance of public cooperation in reducing activities that contribute to poor air quality.
