Wichita, Kansas – Severe thunderstorms could rapidly intensify across Kansas by early afternoon Friday, bringing large hail and damaging winds as early as 1 p.m.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, storm development is expected between 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. along and just northwest of the Kansas Turnpike, with high confidence in both timing and widespread impacts. Initial storms near Pratt, Hutchinson, and Salina may produce hail up to 2 inches in diameter before evolving into a fast-moving line.

By 5 p.m., the threat shifts into Wichita, Winfield, and Emporia, where wind gusts between 60 and 70 mph could down trees and power lines. The most intense period for central and south-central Kansas will occur between 5 p.m. and 9 p.m., with a tornado or two possible before 9 p.m., especially in areas where storms remain more isolated.

Storms will continue east into Chanute and Coffeyville between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m., with heavy rainfall becoming a primary concern. Localized downpours could lead to brief flooding, particularly in low-lying roads and poor drainage areas.

Residents should secure outdoor items, charge devices, and be ready to act quickly if warnings are issued. Storms will move quickly, leaving little time to react once they develop. Additional alerts remain likely through late tonight.
