South Texas Storms May 1: 120 MPH Winds, Tornado Near Guadalupe

Corpus Christi, TX – Severe storms that moved through parts of South Texas on Friday left behind a wide path of damage, including destructive straight-line winds reaching up to 120 mph and a confirmed EF-1 tornado.

According to the National Weather Service in Corpus Christi, a preliminary damage survey found a 40-mile-long swath of intense wind damage stretching from the Coleto Creek area through Placedo to Point Comfort in Victoria and Calhoun counties. The strongest winds, estimated at 120 mph, occurred between 1:50 p.m. and 2:35 p.m. CDT on May 1, 2026, causing significant structural and agricultural damage across the region.

Survey teams also confirmed an EF-1 tornado southwest of Guadalupe near Jared and York Road. The tornado was on the ground for approximately four minutes, from 2:02 p.m. to 2:06 p.m., with peak winds estimated at 110 mph. It carved a path about 1.1 miles long and up to 400 yards wide, damaging homes and outbuildings.

Photos released by the National Weather Service show heavily damaged structures, including homes partially torn apart and debris scattered across open fields. Crops in affected areas also appeared flattened by the ուժ of the winds.

Despite the intensity of the storm system, no injuries or fatalities have been reported as of this update.
