Lansing, MI – Two Michigan Department of Transportation construction workers were killed Tuesday afternoon after being struck by a vehicle along northbound US-127 near Holt Road in Ingham County, authorities said.
According to the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office, deputies responded around 1:18 p.m. Tuesday, May 26, for reports of a crash involving a passenger vehicle and MDOT road workers.
Investigators said a vehicle driven by a 24-year-old Dewitt man allegedly lost control before striking two MDOT workers near the construction zone. The victims, identified only as a 49-year-old Mason man and a 51-year-old Mason man, both died at the scene.
Authorities said the driver was transported to a local hospital and remains listed in critical condition.
Northbound US-127 was shut down for several hours as emergency crews worked to provide lifesaving efforts and investigate the crash scene. The roadway later reopened around 6:30 p.m.
Multiple agencies responded to the incident, including Delhi Township Fire, Mason Fire, MMR Ambulance, the Meridian Township Police Department, Michigan State University Police, and members of the Ingham Regional Crash Investigation Team.
Investigators said speed is preliminarily believed to be a factor in the crash, though the investigation remains ongoing. Officials noted names of those involved are being withheld pending family notifications.
