Rapid City, SD – A winter weather advisory is in effect for multiple areas of South Dakota and Wyoming, with snow expected to create hazardous travel conditions through early Friday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Rapid City, snow will begin falling in the Black Hills, Rapid City, and surrounding regions by noon Thursday and continue through 5 a.m. MST Friday. Accumulations are expected to range from 2 to 7 inches, with localized higher amounts possible.

In Southern Jackson County, snowfall will begin around 2 p.m. Thursday, bringing 2 to 6 inches of accumulation. Meanwhile, Tripp County will experience snowfall starting at 6 p.m. CST Thursday, continuing until noon Friday, potentially affecting the Friday morning commute.

Western Wyoming counties, including Northern Campbell and Western Crook, are also under a winter weather advisory. These areas could see between 2 and 6 inches of snow, particularly along Interstate 90, with lesser amounts expected near the Montana border.

The storm is expected to make roads slippery and impact evening commutes on Thursday. Authorities advise motorists to slow down, use caution, and check 511 for the latest road conditions before traveling.

Snowfall could lead to reduced visibility and icy conditions, particularly in higher elevations. Residents are encouraged to prepare for winter driving and allow extra time for travel through Friday morning.
