Sioux Falls, S.D. – A brief stretch of cooler weather is coming to an end across eastern South Dakota, southwest Minnesota, northwest Iowa and northeast Nebraska as summer heat rapidly builds into the weekend. By Sunday, some communities could see temperatures exceed 100 degrees, with heat index values climbing into the lower 100s.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, light to moderate showers will continue Thursday, mainly along and south of the Missouri River Valley, while much of the region experiences afternoon highs between 78 and 82 degrees. Temperatures remain relatively comfortable Friday, with highs ranging from 78 to 88 degrees under mostly dry skies.
The warming trend accelerates Saturday as highs climb to 92 to 101 degrees across the region. By Sunday, afternoon temperatures are expected to reach 94 to 103 degrees, with humidity pushing heat index values into the lower 100s in some locations.
The combination of hot temperatures and increasing humidity will elevate the risk of heat-related illnesses, especially during the afternoon and early evening. Residents should drink plenty of water, wear lightweight clothing, limit strenuous outdoor activities during peak heating hours and check on older adults, young children and others without adequate cooling.
The National Weather Service says the hottest conditions are expected to arrive this weekend, and additional heat-related advisories may be issued if confidence continues to increase.
