Sioux Falls, SD – South Dakota residents can expect rapidly falling temperatures and scattered flurries as the New Year approaches. A series of colder air masses will bring periodic light snow chances and sub-zero wind chills by the weekend.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, scattered flurries are possible Tuesday evening, with highs near 29°F and gusts reaching 25 mph. Overnight, temperatures will drop to a low of 14°F under mostly cloudy skies. On New Year’s Day, sunny skies are expected, but temperatures will only reach 26°F, with brisk northwest winds adding to the chill.

By Thursday, daytime highs will hover around 21°F, but colder nights are on the way. The weekend forecast predicts sub-zero lows and wind chills falling into the teens below zero. Snow chances increase late Saturday, with a 50% chance of accumulation extending into Sunday.

Drivers should exercise caution, especially on rural roadways, as sudden snow flurries and icy patches could impact visibility. Those planning New Year’s travel should prepare for slower travel times and ensure vehicles are equipped with emergency supplies.

The extended forecast shows highs dropping to 13°F by Saturday, with wind chills adding to the dangerous cold. Residents should bundle up and limit outdoor exposure, particularly during overnight hours.
