Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Increasing rain and storm activity this evening could quickly impact travel south of I-90, where isolated severe storms may develop with damaging wind gusts and hail.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, storm chances will increase through Sunday afternoon and evening, with the greatest risk for stronger storms focused south of I-90, including areas near Sioux City and Storm Lake. A few storms may produce wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail up to quarter size between 6 p.m. and midnight.
Communities including Sioux Falls, Yankton, Mitchell, and Spencer will see periods of rain and embedded thunderstorms, with visibility reductions and slick roads possible along I-29 and I-90. While widespread severe weather is not expected, isolated stronger storms could still create localized impacts.
Storm chances continue into Monday, especially along and east of a line from Ida Grove, Iowa to Windom, Minnesota. Behind the system, northwest winds will increase, with gusts between 30 and 45 mph developing Monday afternoon. These winds may make travel difficult for high-profile vehicles and could blow around loose objects.
Drivers should remain alert for rapidly changing conditions tonight and prepare for gusty winds Monday. Secure outdoor items and allow extra travel time in wet conditions.
Rain will taper Monday night, followed by cooler and drier weather Tuesday. Additional updates are expected if stronger storms develop this evening.
