Paducah, Kentucky – A dangerous round of severe storms is expected to develop within hours Monday afternoon, with the potential to disrupt travel, knock out power, and produce tornadoes across the Quad State region.
According to the National Weather Service in Paducah, an enhanced risk (Level 3 of 5) covers western Kentucky, southern Illinois, southeast Missouri, and southwest Indiana. Storms are expected to intensify after 4 p.m. Monday, with the most dangerous window lasting through late evening. Damaging wind gusts up to 70 mph, hail larger than 2 inches, and strong tornadoes are all possible.
Cities including Paducah, Cape Girardeau, Carbondale, and Mayfield sit in the highest risk zone. Major routes like I-24, I-55, and I-69 could see sudden visibility drops and debris if storms rapidly strengthen. Emergency managers warn that conditions may evolve quickly depending on any morning storm activity, which could shift the highest threat corridor.
Residents are urged to finalize severe weather plans now, charge devices, and identify safe shelter locations—especially basements or interior rooms. Have multiple ways to receive warnings, including overnight alerts.
Another round of storms is possible Tuesday afternoon, with a Level 2 risk extending across the region. Additional updates are expected by late afternoon Sunday as confidence in storm timing increases.
