Sioux Falls, South Dakota – Drivers across southeastern South Dakota should brace for hazardous conditions this morning as dense fog blankets areas along the Missouri River, cutting visibility to less than a quarter mile in spots.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect through 9 a.m. Wednesday for counties including Yankton, Olivet, and Lake Andes, with the fog potentially expanding further northeast. The advisory also extends into parts of northeast Nebraska, including Wayne and O’Neill.

The thick fog is especially dangerous for early commuters on major routes like U.S. Highway 81 and portions of I-29 near Beresford and Sioux City. Officials urge drivers to slow down, use headlights, and avoid stopping in traffic lanes. Visibility may improve mid-morning as temperatures rise.

This is the season’s first significant fog event for the area, and with school still in session and farm traffic active, extra caution is critical. Residents are reminded to use windshield wipers, eliminate distractions, and use the road’s edge as a guide when visibility drops.

Drivers should monitor updates from the NWS as the fog may linger in low-lying areas past 9 a.m. if winds remain calm.
