Grand Rapids, Michigan – Showers are expected to dampen much of western Michigan on Thursday, with roads around Grand Rapids—including US-131 and I-196—likely to be slick during the morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service, rain will begin mainly after 3 p.m. Thursday and could continue into the evening, with an 80% chance of precipitation. Rainfall totals should stay under a quarter of an inch, but localized downpours may reduce visibility and cause minor ponding on roadways.

Thursday’s high will reach 66°F, but cooler air follows quickly behind. By Thursday night, skies turn partly cloudy with a low near 50°F and calmer winds. The risk of showers drops off significantly after sunset, setting the stage for a steady warming trend into the weekend.

Friday looks mostly sunny with a slight chance (30%) of afternoon thunderstorms. Temperatures rebound to 74°F, though gusts could reach 22 mph. By Saturday, West Michigan welcomes full sun and summer-like highs near 71°F. Sunday and Monday continue the trend, with clear skies and highs rising into the low 80s.

Expect mostly dry, calm weather through at least Tuesday, when sunny skies and an 86°F high mark the warmest day of the upcoming stretch.

Prepare now: Drivers should allow extra time Thursday afternoon, avoid flooded roadways, and monitor weather alerts. With summer heat building, ensure hydration, sun protection, and proper vehicle maintenance for safe travel into the weekend.
