Sioux Falls, S.D. – South Dakotans should brace for critical fire conditions starting Sunday, as winds gusting up to 45 mph and low humidity spark heightened fire danger across the eastern half of the state through Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, a Fire Weather Watch is in effect from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday, with multiple days of very warm, dry, and windy conditions expected. Afternoon temperatures are forecast to soar into the 80s and low 90s, while relative humidity levels dip below 20 percent, creating ideal conditions for rapid fire spread.
The highest threat zones include areas from Chamberlain to Sioux Falls, stretching north toward Watertown and Brookings. Winds are expected to intensify daily between Sunday and Tuesday, with sustained gusts from the south reaching 35 to 45 mph each afternoon. These conditions, combined with dry grasses and vegetation, could lead to fast-moving wildfires, especially in open fields and rural communities.
Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, secure loose materials, and report any signs of smoke or fire immediately. Farmers and ranchers should also take precautions with machinery and avoid working near dry brush during peak wind hours.
Fire danger remains elevated through midweek, and additional warnings are possible.
