Sioux Falls, SD – A cold front bringing snow and freezing conditions will impact southeastern South Dakota starting Thursday morning. Travelers along I-90 and I-29 should prepare for icy roads, low visibility, and dangerous wind chills.

According to the National Weather Service, snow showers are expected early Thursday, tapering off by mid-morning. Accumulation could reach up to an inch, with isolated pockets seeing slightly higher totals. Wind chills will dip into the minus teens, creating a frostbite risk for exposed skin in less than 30 minutes.

The weather will improve slightly on Friday, with mostly cloudy skies and a high near 23 degrees. However, wintry precipitation is likely to return by Friday evening, with a mix of snow and freezing rain expected into Saturday morning. Saturday’s high of 31 degrees offers little relief, as more icy conditions are anticipated.

Motorists should exercise caution, especially during the Thursday morning commute and late Friday night. Quick drops in temperature may cause wet roads to freeze rapidly, leading to hazardous conditions. Use extra time to reach your destination and carry an emergency kit if traveling long distances.

The five-day forecast highlights a gradual warmup by Sunday, with highs nearing 40 degrees and partly sunny skies. Despite the reprieve, winter conditions are expected to return early next week, so continue monitoring local forecasts for updates.
