Austin, TX – Dense fog continues to create hazardous driving conditions along the I-35 corridor Friday morning, reducing visibility to 1/4 mile or less in some areas. Motorists are urged to use low beams, reduce speed, and increase the distance between vehicles to ensure safety. The National Weather Service (NWS) expects the fog to lift by 9 a.m., giving way to mostly cloudy skies with temperatures reaching a high of 67 degrees.
According to the NWS, the patchy fog is part of a lingering Gulf airmass bringing moisture and unseasonably warm weather to the region. Saturday’s forecast predicts a high near 75 degrees with clear skies by nightfall, making it an ideal start to the weekend for outdoor plans. However, a strong cold front is expected to arrive Sunday afternoon, drastically dropping temperatures into the low 30s and below-freezing in some areas by Monday morning.
Drivers should remain cautious throughout the day as patchy fog may re-develop in the evening. Sunday’s strong winds could reach 25 mph, creating near-critical fire weather conditions across Central Texas.
Heading into the workweek, temperatures will remain well below average. Monday’s high is forecasted at 50 degrees, with morning lows dipping into the 20s. Residents should prepare for several sub-freezing mornings next week and take precautions to protect plants, pets, and exposed pipes.
