Wichita, KS – A sharp rise in temperatures is set to grip South Central Kansas through midweek, with highs expected to surge into the 90s by Thursday. The sudden heat increase, combined with gusty winds and low humidity, is expected to elevate fire danger across the region.

According to the National Weather Service in Wichita, temperatures on Tuesday will be mild, with highs hovering around 70°F. By Wednesday, the region will experience highs between 76°F and 84°F, with late-night storms possibly developing over southeast Kansas, including areas near Coffeyville, Winfield, and Chanute.

Thursday marks the peak of the heatwave, with forecast highs between 85°F and 92°F. The warmth will be accompanied by very low relative humidity and strong winds, significantly raising the fire danger level. The weather service warns of very high fire danger conditions across counties such as Sedgwick, Butler, and Sumner.

Residents are urged to avoid outdoor burning, secure any flammable materials, and remain weather-aware, especially overnight Wednesday when storms may develop. This shift marks a dramatic change from Monday’s cool weather, where many cities, including Salina and Emporia, recorded highs in the 60s and lows in the 30s.
