New Mexico – A hard freeze and elevated fire danger are expected to impact multiple regions through Friday.

According to the National Weather Service in Albuquerque, dry, windy, and warm conditions Thursday are creating an increased risk of rapid fire spread across eastern New Mexico. Forecast wind gusts combined with very low humidity — in some areas dropping near or below 10% — are prompting officials to discourage any outdoor burning.

The fire risk is expected to continue into Friday, though temperatures will trend cooler. Despite the cooldown, conditions will remain dry and breezy enough to sustain elevated fire concerns, particularly across eastern parts of the state.

By Friday night, a more significant hazard develops as a hard freeze is forecast across northern and western New Mexico. Temperatures are expected to drop sharply, with lows falling into the teens in some areas, including parts of the Four Corners region and higher elevations. The Santa Fe metro area and Estancia Valley are also expected to see freezing conditions.

Officials warn that parts of the Rio Grande Valley, extending from near Albuquerque south toward Belen, could also experience freezing temperatures. Residents are urged to take precautions to protect plants, pets, and exposed pipes from cold-related damage.

For residents, especially those commuting early or managing outdoor responsibilities, the rapid shift from fire risk to freezing temperatures may create added challenges over a short period.
