Columbia, SC – Freezing rain is expected to create hazardous conditions Friday night across central South Carolina, particularly near Interstate 77. A Winter Storm Watch is in effect from Friday at 7 a.m. to Saturday at 7 a.m. for Chesterfield, Kershaw, Lancaster, and Newberry counties.

According to the National Weather Service, freezing rain could result in up to 0.25 inches of ice accumulation. Icy roads, especially on bridges and overpasses, may make travel dangerous. Power outages are also possible in areas with significant ice buildup. Residents are urged to prepare by monitoring weather updates, avoiding nonessential travel, and stocking up on supplies in case of power disruptions.

Friday will begin with light rain, with temperatures peaking near 37°F. Rain is expected to transition into freezing rain after 9 p.m. as temperatures drop to around 32°F. Road conditions may worsen overnight, impacting early morning travel on Saturday.

Sunny weather will return Saturday, with a high near 47°F and clear skies continuing through the weekend. Lows will drop into the 20s at night, so remaining ice may persist in shaded areas.

Take precautions now to ensure safety as freezing rain moves into the area Friday night.
