Columbia, SC – A period of frozen precipitation, primarily freezing rain, is expected to impact parts of South Carolina on Wednesday, with the highest risk north and east of Columbia.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Columbia, areas within the Central Savannah River Area (CSRA), including Augusta, have the greatest likelihood of seeing freezing rain. Probability maps indicate that northern regions, particularly in the Pee Dee counties, have a 40-80% chance of accumulating over 0.10 inches of ice.

The potential for winter weather could lead to hazardous travel conditions, especially on bridges and overpasses. Residents are advised to monitor forecasts for possible Winter Weather Advisories as the system approaches.

Following the precipitation, a strong cold air mass will settle over the region. The NWS warns that much of South Carolina will experience overnight lows at or below 25°F on Thursday night, increasing the risk of black ice.

Drivers are urged to use caution, and those in affected areas should prepare for icy conditions. Stay updated with the latest forecasts from the NWS and local officials.
