Springfield, IL – A winter weather system is set to bring light to moderate snowfall across southern Illinois, followed by dangerously cold wind chills statewide. The National Weather Service warns of slippery roads and slow commutes starting Tuesday evening.

According to the NWS Central Illinois, snow is expected from Beardstown to Paris beginning Tuesday afternoon and continuing through early Wednesday. Most accumulation will occur between 6 p.m. Tuesday and 6 a.m. Wednesday, with heavier snowfall in southern Illinois. While amounts may be light in central and southeast Illinois, road conditions could become hazardous.

In addition to snow, bitter cold is forecast to grip the state. A Wind Chill Advisory is in effect from 9 p.m. Monday until noon Tuesday, with temperatures dropping as low as -20°F along and north of the I-70 corridor. The NWS warns of frostbite risks in as little as 30 minutes due to dangerously low wind chills.

Residents should prepare for slow travel and take precautions against extreme cold. Officials recommend wearing layered clothing outdoors, bringing pets inside, and ensuring pipes are insulated to prevent freezing.
