Greenville, South Carolina – Holiday travelers across the western Carolinas could face repeated rounds of heavy rain and thunderstorms through midweek as a persistent wet weather pattern settles over the region.
According to the National Weather Service in Greenville-Spartanburg, rain chances remain extremely high Monday and Tuesday, with many communities across Upstate South Carolina and western North Carolina carrying precipitation probabilities above 90%. Forecasters say widespread rain is expected Monday afternoon and evening, with embedded thunderstorms and pockets of heavy rainfall possible, especially across the western Upstate and mountain communities.
Cities including Greenville, Spartanburg, Asheville, Anderson and Hickory may experience periods of reduced visibility and ponding on roads along Interstate 85, I-26 and Interstate 40 during heavier downpours. Some storms Tuesday could also produce isolated lightning and brief localized flooding where rain repeatedly tracks over the same areas.
Rain coverage begins decreasing somewhat Wednesday, though scattered showers are still expected, particularly across the mountains and foothills. Lower terrain areas across the Piedmont may begin seeing longer dry stretches by midweek, but roads and outdoor areas could remain saturated after multiple days of rainfall.
Emergency managers encourage residents to avoid flooded roadways and allow extra travel time during the Memorial Day return commute. Additional flood advisories or thunderstorm alerts may be issued if rainfall totals increase faster than currently projected.
