San Angelo, Texas – Residents across West Central Texas should prepare for dangerous heat conditions beginning Wednesday as temperatures surge into the triple digits and humidity pushes heat index values well above actual air temperatures.

According to the National Weather Service in San Angelo, temperatures between 100 and 105 degrees are expected Wednesday and Thursday across the Big Country, Concho Valley and Heartland regions. When combined with elevated humidity levels, heat index values could climb between 105 and 110 degrees, creating a moderate risk of heat-related illness.

The hottest conditions Wednesday are expected across portions of the Big Country, Concho Valley and Heartland, before expanding across most of West Central Texas on Thursday. Cities including San Angelo, Abilene, Brownwood, Ballinger and Sweetwater could experience prolonged periods of dangerous afternoon heat.

Forecasters warn that the moderate heat risk may affect anyone sensitive to high temperatures, especially those without access to air conditioning, adequate hydration or frequent cooling breaks. Outdoor workers, athletes, older adults and individuals with underlying health conditions face an increased risk of heat exhaustion and heat-related illness.

Residents are urged to drink water before becoming thirsty, wear lightweight and light-colored clothing, and schedule strenuous outdoor activities during the early morning or evening hours. Frequent breaks in air-conditioned buildings or shaded areas are strongly recommended.

The hottest part of each day is expected during the afternoon and early evening hours Wednesday and Thursday. Additional heat advisories may be issued if temperatures or humidity levels trend higher than currently forecast.
