South Bend, IN – Northern Indiana is in for a stretch of sticky, uncomfortable weather this week as tropical-level humidity settles into the region, making it feel much hotter than the thermometer alone suggests.
According to the National Weather Service Northern Indiana, dew points are expected to remain in the low 70s each day this week, creating muggy to oppressive conditions across South Bend, Elkhart, Goshen, Warsaw, and surrounding communities.
Unlike air temperature, the dew point measures the amount of moisture in the air. The higher the dew point, the harder it is for sweat to evaporate from the skin, reducing the body’s ability to cool itself. Dew points in the 70s are generally considered oppressive and can make outdoor conditions feel especially uncomfortable, even when temperatures are not at their peak.
The National Weather Service notes that high humidity can increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, particularly for people working or exercising outdoors, older adults, young children, and anyone without access to adequate cooling.
Residents are encouraged to drink plenty of water, take frequent breaks if spending time outside, wear lightweight clothing, and seek air-conditioned spaces during the warmest part of the day. Checking on vulnerable neighbors and never leaving children or pets in parked vehicles are also strongly recommended.
Forecasters advise monitoring the latest weather updates throughout the week, as periods of heat and humidity may also contribute to the development of afternoon and evening thunderstorms.
