South Bend, Indiana – Temperatures will drop fast after sunset, putting crops and outdoor plumbing at risk as a hard freeze grips northern Indiana by midnight Sunday night.

According to the National Weather Service in Northern Indiana, a Freeze Warning takes effect from midnight through 11 a.m. Monday, with lows falling to 25°F across a wide stretch of the region. The alert includes cities from South Bend and Elkhart to Fort Wayne, extending into southwest Michigan and northwest Ohio.

Sensitive vegetation faces the highest risk, especially in agricultural counties like LaGrange, Noble, and DeKalb where early planting is underway. In urban areas such as Fort Wayne and South Bend, unprotected outdoor pipes could freeze during the early morning hours, particularly between 3 a.m. and 8 a.m. when temperatures bottom out.

Drivers won’t see major road impacts, but frost could develop on bridges and overpasses, especially along I-80/90 and U.S. 31 before sunrise Monday. Residents are urged to cover or bring in plants, disconnect garden hoses, and insulate exposed pipes tonight.

The cold snap will ease by late Monday morning as temperatures climb above freezing, but additional advisories could be issued if another overnight dip develops early this week.
