Champaign, IL – Snowfall across central Illinois will taper off from west to east Friday evening, leaving behind slippery roads and reduced visibility. Motorists along I-72 should prepare for hazardous conditions, with freezing drizzle possible late Saturday.

According to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Lincoln, snow accumulations of 1 to 3 inches are expected north of I-72, with 2 to 4 inches south of the interstate. The snow system will exit central Illinois by 10 p.m. Friday, but scattered flurries and icy patches could linger into Saturday morning.

Temperatures will plummet over the weekend, with highs in the 20s on Saturday and lows dropping into the single digits Sunday night. NWS forecasts patchy freezing drizzle Saturday night, particularly near I-70, which could worsen road conditions. A secondary clipper system may bring light snow north of I-72 Sunday afternoon.

Travelers are urged to allow extra time and check road conditions at Getting Around Illinois before heading out. Be cautious of slick bridges and overpasses, which tend to freeze quickly in frigid weather.

The five-day outlook shows cold temperatures persisting into early next week. Highs on Monday and Tuesday will stay below freezing, with lows dipping to near zero Tuesday night. Sunshine returns Monday and Tuesday, offering some relief from the winter storm.
