Grand Rapids, MI – A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for much of central and southwest Michigan as heavy snow moves into the area today. The National Weather Service (NWS) warns that snowfall rates could reach up to 1 inch per hour, particularly from Muskegon to Saugatuck, creating slick roadways and reduced visibility through Saturday morning.
According to the NWS, the heaviest snow will begin during the late morning hours Friday, continuing into the afternoon with total accumulations ranging from 3 to 6 inches near the lakeshore and 2 to 5 inches further inland. Lake effect snow showers will persist Friday night, bringing localized bursts of heavy snow. Motorists are urged to allow extra travel time and monitor Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) updates for hazardous road conditions on key routes like US-131 and I-196.
Saturday will see lingering snow showers, mainly in the morning, with temperatures peaking near 30°F and winds shifting to the west-northwest at 7 mph. Saturday night, skies will clear slightly, with lows dipping to around 21°F.
Looking ahead, Sunday introduces another chance of snow and mixed precipitation, with highs near 31°F. Monday and Tuesday will remain snowy, with highs in the mid-20s. Travel conditions could remain hazardous through early next week.
Residents are advised to stock up on essentials, check road conditions before traveling, and take precautions to avoid frostbite in freezing temperatures.
