Syracuse, NY – A winter weather advisory has been issued for Onondaga and Southern Cayuga counties, warning of lake effect snow beginning late Sunday night. Travelers are urged to prepare for hazardous road conditions during Monday morning’s commute.
According to the National Weather Service, snow will start at 10 p.m. Sunday and continue through 10 a.m. Monday. Accumulations of 3 to 6 inches are expected, with the heaviest snowfall concentrated in western Onondaga County and northern Cayuga County, including Auburn.
Motorists should expect slippery roads and reduced visibility, particularly on major routes like Interstate 81 and Route 20. Authorities recommend slowing down, allowing extra travel time, and keeping an emergency kit in your vehicle.
The advisory also notes that snow-covered roads may lead to travel delays, especially for school buses and early commuters. Residents are encouraged to monitor local forecasts and consider working remotely if conditions worsen.
Looking ahead, the five-day forecast suggests colder-than-average temperatures with scattered snow showers persisting through midweek. Daytime highs will hover in the mid-30s, with overnight lows dipping into the low 20s. By Thursday, conditions are expected to improve, bringing clearer skies and slightly warmer temperatures.
Residents can report snowfall totals to the National Weather Service through social media or their website. Stay updated by checking your local weather station or dialing 511 for road condition updates.
