Clendenin, WV — A bizarre confrontation inside a chicken coop being used as a residence in Clendenin allegedly ended in a stabbing Tuesday, leaving one woman injured and another now wanted on a felony burglary charge, authorities said.

According to the Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched Tuesday to Big Sandy Road in Clendenin after reports of a disturbance inside a chicken coop that was reportedly being used as living quarters.

Deputy H.R. Shamblin and Cpl. J.S. Ashcraft responded and made contact with James Hammack and his daughter, Ashley Thompson, who told deputies they were living inside the structure at the time of the incident.

Investigators said Hammack reported hearing a woman later identified as Anna Groves allegedly shouting threats while approaching the coop. Authorities said Hammack told deputies Groves allegedly screamed that she was going to kill Thompson.

According to the sheriff’s office, Thompson told deputies she was asleep inside the coop when Groves and another person allegedly attempted to force their way inside. Groves allegedly entered the structure and confronted Thompson. During the confrontation, Thompson reportedly pulled a knife and stabbed Groves.

Authorities said Groves and another individual fled the scene before deputies arrived.

The Kanawha County Sheriff’s Office later learned that a woman suffering from a stab wound had arrived at CAMC General Hospital in Charleston. Investigators identified the patient as Groves.

In a recorded statement to deputies, Groves allegedly admitted she entered the coop intending to confront Thompson over money she believed had been stolen. Groves reportedly claimed she did not intend to kill Thompson but allegedly planned to assault her.

Deputies said Groves stated she felt a punch and a sharp pain after entering the coop, realizing she had been stabbed.

Authorities said no charges are being filed against Thompson in connection with the stabbing.

Groves is now being charged with felony burglary, and a warrant has been issued for her arrest, the sheriff’s office said.
