Yreka, CA – Siskiyou County deputies seized more than 3,600 pounds of illegal marijuana products this week after two separate traffic stops uncovered large-scale shipments linked to Northern California grow operations.
According to the Siskiyou County Sheriff’s Office, the most recent stop occurred Sunday near Grenada, when a deputy pulled over a Penske rental truck for a lighting violation. A probable cause search reportedly uncovered 62 trash bags filled with illegal marijuana products weighing approximately 1,429 pounds.
Deputies say the driver, Thibault Charvy, 43, of Willits, confirmed the marijuana originated from the Shasta Vista region. Charvy was arrested for the transportation and possession of marijuana for sale and booked into the Siskiyou County Jail.
A second major discovery happened days earlier in the Mount Shasta area, when deputies stopped a Home Depot box truck for expired registration. The driver, Qinghai Tan, 46, of San Lorenzo, allegedly told deputies he was traveling to Seattle and admitted he was transporting illegal items.
When deputies opened the rear of the truck, they found 28 boxes containing 2,184 illegal juvenile marijuana plants. According to the Sheriff’s Office, Tan did not have the required permits to transport marijuana and was subsequently arrested and cited for possession and transportation of marijuana for sale.
Authorities say these traffic stops coincide with ongoing search-warrant operations and eradication efforts across more than 2,000 illegal marijuana cultivation sites countywide. Sheriff’s officials note that despite consistent enforcement actions, current state laws limit the penalties available for environmental damage, trafficking, and related crimes tied to illicit grow operations.
The Sheriff’s Office emphasized that legislative changes are needed to better protect public lands, private property, and tribal areas impacted by illegal cultivation.
