Hancock County, IN – A man was fatally shot Tuesday afternoon in Hancock County, and authorities say a suspect is in custody while detectives continue to investigate what appears to be an isolated incident.

According to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department, deputies responded at approximately 4:05 p.m. on Tuesday, July 21, 2026, to the area of 7600 W. County Road 350 North, near the Hancock-Marion County line, after receiving reports of a person who had been shot inside a vehicle.

The Hancock County 911 Center advised responding deputies that an on-duty Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department (IMPD) officer happened to be nearby, was flagged down, and had already detained a male suspect at the scene.

Deputies located two vehicles stopped in the area and found a single male victim inside one of the vehicles suffering from apparent gunshot wounds. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities said the alleged shooter, an adult male, was taken into custody by Hancock County deputies and transported to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office for questioning. An adult female who was in the suspect’s vehicle was also taken to the sheriff’s office for questioning as a witness.

The victim’s identity has not yet been released pending notification procedures.

According to the sheriff’s office, preliminary evidence indicates the shooting may have stemmed from a dispute between the suspect and the victim. Investigators said they do not believe there is any ongoing threat to the public and described the incident as isolated.

The Hancock County Sheriff’s Department is working with the Hancock County Prosecutor’s Office as the investigation continues. Authorities said additional information will be released as it becomes available.
