Sioux Falls, S.D. – Smoke from distant wildfires is blanketing eastern South Dakota Sunday and is expected to linger into early Monday, reducing visibility and triggering air quality alerts just before severe storms develop.

According to the National Weather Service in Sioux Falls, scattered strong to severe thunderstorms are forecast to form Monday afternoon along a cold front sweeping across central and southern South Dakota. Spotter activation may be needed after 3 p.m. as storms bring hazards like ping-pong ball size hail, wind gusts up to 60 mph, and pockets of heavy rain through Monday night.

Air quality may remain unhealthy for sensitive groups across areas including Sioux Falls, Brookings, Yankton, and Mitchell. Officials recommend limiting time outdoors, especially for those with asthma or heart conditions.

Storms will begin developing near Chamberlain and Winner, then slide southeast toward the I-29 corridor by evening. High winds may down power lines or snap tree limbs, and drivers should be alert to sudden changes in visibility and slick roads after sunset.

The severe threat diminishes by early Tuesday, but showers may linger. Stay tuned for additional alerts and updated warnings through Monday night.
