Richmond, VA – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Wakefield, VA, has issued a slight risk alert (level 2/5) for severe thunderstorms across much of eastern Virginia today, including the possibility of tornadoes. The primary threat stems from damaging wind gusts, though the NWS warns that a brief tornado or two cannot be ruled out.
According to the NWS, storms are expected to develop this afternoon, lasting into the late evening hours, particularly from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. The areas most at risk for these damaging winds and possible tornadoes are those east of I-95, with the tornado threat largely concentrated north of US-460.
Residents are urged to stay vigilant and have a plan in place for outdoor activities. The NWS recommends identifying shelter areas and ensuring multiple methods of receiving weather warnings. Heavy rainfall accompanying these storms could also lead to localized flooding.
