A high-speed chase through Santa Fe ended Sunday after the suspect crashed into a portable toilet and was shot by police. Authorities identified the suspect as 21-year-old Justin Jimenez.
The incident began around 2:00 AM when Jimenez allegedly stole a white Jeep Grand Cherokee. The vehicle’s owner tracked it using an AirTag, updating police with its location throughout the morning.
Officers first located the Jeep near a McDonald’s on Cerrillos Road, but Jimenez fled. A sheriff’s deputy attempted another stop but called off the pursuit due to nearby parade activities. Jimenez reportedly drove recklessly through the city, plowing through barricades and crashing into a portable toilet near Sheridan Avenue.
Police opened fire on Jimenez after the crash, striking him multiple times. Despite his injuries, Jimenez continued fleeing before officers finally apprehended him near East Palace Avenue. He was transported to a local hospital with non-life-threatening injuries.
New Mexico State Police are investigating the shooting. Authorities are asking the public to provide any video footage of the incident.
