San Antonio, TX – Residents across San Antonio and much of southwest and south-central Texas are being urged to prepare for a prolonged heavy rain event that could produce life-threatening flash flooding through Thursday.
According to the National Water Center and NOAA, considerable flooding impacts are expected across portions of southwest and south-central Texas as deep tropical moisture fuels repeated rounds of thunderstorms. Rainfall totals of 4 to 8 inches are forecast across many areas, with isolated locations receiving even higher amounts.
Forecasters warn that rainfall rates could reach 2 to 4 inches per hour during the heaviest storms, quickly overwhelming drainage systems and creating dangerous flash flooding. The greatest threat extends across the San Antonio region and surrounding communities, where roads, creeks, and low-water crossings could become hazardous with little warning.
In addition to flash flooding, officials say minor to isolated moderate river flooding is possible as rivers and streams respond to the prolonged rainfall. The National Water Center notes that flooding may threaten life and property, with the potential for road closures, evacuations, and swift-water rescues in the hardest-hit areas.
Residents are encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel in flood-prone locations, especially after dark when flooded roads are more difficult to recognize. Motorists should never drive through water-covered roadways and should remember the safety message: Turn Around, Don’t Drown.
The National Water Center advises Texans to closely monitor forecasts and any Flash Flood Watches or Warnings that may be issued as the event unfolds through Thursday.
