San Antonio, Texas – A dangerous cold stretch continues across South Central Texas as an Extreme Cold Warning remains in effect through 9 a.m. Tuesday, with wind chills dropping as low as 4° in the Hill Country and southern Edwards Plateau.
According to the National Weather Service in Austin/San Antonio, overnight lows will range from 8° to 23°, with the harshest wind chills hitting counties like Kerr, Gillespie, and Uvalde. Austin, San Antonio, and surrounding cities can expect feels-like temperatures in the teens, making the early commute potentially hazardous.
Residents are urged to protect people, pets, plants, and pipes, especially in rural and elevated areas where prolonged exposure could lead to frostbite or hypothermia. TXDOT crews remain active, but any moisture on roadways could refreeze, creating slick spots during early morning travel.
The extreme cold continues to strain power demand and could impact water infrastructure in exposed systems. Residents should limit time outdoors, check on neighbors, and ensure heating devices are used safely to prevent carbon monoxide risk.
The warning remains active until mid-morning Tuesday, with updates expected if the cold persists or intensifies.
