Chicago, IL – Samsung has issued a recall for approximately 1,120,905 slide-in electric ranges due to a potential fire hazard. The recall, announced on Tuesday, affects models NE58F9500SS/AA and NE63A8711QN/AA, as well as NE58K9850WS/AA and NE63T8111SS/AA. These units were sold nationwide at major retailers such as Best Buy, Costco, and The Home Depot from May 2013 through August 2024, with prices ranging from $1,250 to $3,050.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the front-mounted knobs on these ranges can be accidentally activated by humans or pets, potentially leading to a fire. Since 2013, Samsung has received over 300 reports of unintentional activation, resulting in around 250 fires. At least 18 of these fires caused significant property damage, and approximately 40 injuries have been reported, eight of which required medical attention. There have also been reports of seven fires involving pet deaths.
Consumers are advised to contact Samsung for a free set of knob locks or covers compatible with the affected models. Additionally, those using Wi-Fi-enabled ranges can enable notifications through the Samsung SmartThings app to alert them if a cooktop burner is turned on.
