Sacramento, CA – A major early-season snowstorm is impacting the Sierra Nevada through Wednesday morning, bringing heavy snowfall, slick roads, and chain controls, according to the National Weather Service in Sacramento.
The system will continue producing moderate to heavy snow from Monday morning through Wednesday morning (Oct. 13–15), with snow levels between 5,500 and 6,500 feet.
Forecast maps show 8–12 inches near Donner Peak, 6–8 inches at Echo Summit, and up to 24–30 inches at Sonora and Ebbetts Pass. Farther north, Lassen National Park could receive 18–24 inches of snow.
Travelers should expect delays, slick mountain roads, and chain requirements on major routes including Interstate 80 and Highway 50. The heaviest snow is forecast Monday evening into Tuesday morning, when visibility and traction may become severely limited.
Forecasters urge drivers to monitor Caltrans QuickMap for real-time road updates and to carry winter gear and emergency supplies if traveling through mountain areas.
