Mt. Vernon, IL – Motorists in Jefferson County should prepare for significant delays as I-64 Eastbound is scheduled for a major closure on Thursday. The closure will span from milepost 61 (Ashley/Centralia Exit) to Exit 73 (I-57 split), beginning at 7 p.m. Thursday. The Illinois Department of Transportation will perform pavement and bridge deck patching, necessitating this closure.
According to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, eastbound traffic will be detoured south onto U.S. Highway 51, then east to Illinois Highway 15, and finally onto I-57. The Eastbound exit and entrance ramps at the Woodlawn Exit (Exit 69) will also close during this period.
The closure is expected to last until 6 a.m. on Friday. Drivers should anticipate increased traffic along Illinois Highway 15 from the Washington County line to I-57 in Mt. Vernon. Local authorities advise planning alternative routes and allowing extra travel time to avoid delays.
